The Uncles
The Uncles began life when Chet Gardiner asked Solomon Choo if he could sit in on guitar while Solomon was playing at the Pure Kona Market in Captain Cook, HI in 2014. After years of working as a duo Solomon and Chet added the incredibly talented drummer Steve Kida on drums in 2022. In late 2022, Marty Kossoff walked up and asked if he could sit in with us sometime. At our next Ho'oulu Market gig in Keauhou, Marty dropped by, set up and became our fourth Uncle.
When Steve is on the mainland playing some music, we often rely on the solid drumming of John Yoeman (from Mauka Soul) to provide the rhythm.
Mauka Soul
Mauka Soul - Tony Cantor, his son Kalima and Luis/BamBam had been formed in the years before Chet Gardiner wandered up and asked to sit in at the Pure Kona Market one Sunday in 2014. After fumbling around on bass and guitar for a bit, Chet went home and did his homework to learn the great Hawai'ian song book that Mauka Soul was playing while continuing sitting in and learning.
Mauka Soul went through a few changes over the years, notably Tony's health issues reduced the band to Kalima, BamBam and Chet. Then excellent singer/songwriter Keoki Cortez joined the group for a couple of years. Kalima, Keoki, BamBam and Chet is the combination that recorded our eponymous first album: Mauka Soul.
